Situation

Science Center of Iowa (SCI) wanted to refresh their web presence and create a site that was more user-friendly and appealed to a broader audience. SCI hoped a new look and improved functionality would increase online admission and IMAX tickets sales, and enable the public to make donations and purchase member passes online. 

Solution

Trilix’s interactive team met with SCI’s staff to identify the most critical website components, then they designed the site map to include all the key elements on — or within two clicks of — the homepage. The new homepage featured a more sophisticated space theme and displayed rotating images of children and adults enjoying SCI’s exhibits. Trilix’s interactive team used dynamic images throughout the entire site to create an enjoyable user experience, and highlighted the upcoming events calendar, traveling exhibit information and ticket purchasing portals to drive online sales.

Results

Science Center of Iowa’s new website was an instant hit! The site averages 2,600 visitors per day, and the average visit time increased from 2 minutes and 40 seconds to 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Ticket sales soared following the launch of the new site. SCI sold 5,000 tickets online in five months – they sold 5,000 tickets online in five years on their old site! Trilix was awarded a 2011 Gold NOVA Award for the interactive design work on SCI’s website.
